Chattanoogans have the opportunity to hear lesser-known works by well-known English composers Sunday afternoon when Choral Arts presents "Cathedral Echoes." The 32-voice chorale will perform at 4 p.m. in St. Paul's Episcopal Church, intersection of Seventh and Pine streets.
Director Keith Reas says the program reflects his affinity for British choral music and for pieces that are less-often performed.
"The program is built around one piece in particular, 'Stabat Mater Dolorosa' by Oldroyd," said the director. "It's a large-scale piece, unaccompanied, that is not recorded anywhere we know of, so it's not heard very often."
The concert repertoire will be divided between unaccompanied numbers and those that are accompanied by organist David Friberg.
Among the a cappella pieces will be two settings of the Magnificat by Charles Villiers Stanford.
The concert will include Benjamin Brittain's "Hymn to St. Peter," John Rutter's "Cantus" and "Alleluia," and Herbert Howell's "Coventry Antiphon." The lyrics of the latter number are based on an inscription that was part of the dedication ceremony for the new Coventry Cathedral, Reas said.
The program will conclude with Rutter's "Amen" for eight-part chorus, which Reas described as "very rich and lush."
"People are going to hear wonderful music that they won't hear anywhere else," he said.
