UTC Music Department offers trio of performances

The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga Music Department has three performances on the agenda in the next week. Tonight is a recital by two guest artists, Saturday features a pianist on the UTC faculty, and Thursday will be a concert by the UTC Orchestra.

All programs start at 7:30 p.m. in the Roland Hayes Concert Hall in the UTC Fine Arts Center, 752 Vine St. Admission is free.

Tonight: The Hayes-Peterson Duo, based in San Antonio, Texas, is composed of Kristin Hayes on flute and Eric Peterson on percussion. The duo will perform works by Steven Snowden, André Jolivet and Ian Dick.

A highlight of their performance is "Mobbing Calls," a piece they commissioned from Snowden and debuted in April. Snowden upends the instruments' traditional places on opposite ends of the musical spectrum (flutes denoting lyrical bird calls, for instance, percussion representing rhythmic aggression) to demonstrate the mobbing behavior of finches, bluegill and meerkats.

Saturday: UTC faculty member and pianist Sin-Hsing Tsai will present "Music of the Americas." The first half of the recital will feature compositions in neo-Baroque, romantic and modern styles written by American composers; the second half will be made up of pieces based on Argentina's children's songs and Creole dances. The represented composers are Aaron Copland, Edward MacDowell, Robert Muczynski, Carlos Guastavino and Alberto Ginastera.

Thursday: Jooyong Ahn directs the UTC Orchestra in a concert featuring "English Folk Songs Suite" by English composer Ralph Vaughan Williams, "Suite for Strings" by American composer Robert Washburn and Symphony No. 2 in D Major by Ludwig van Beethoven.
