Mozart's Coronation Mass in Sewanee

A performance of Mozart's Coronation Mass in Sewanee, Tenn., tonight, April 25, will feature the combined talents of nearly 100 vocalists and musicians. This will be the final concert of the season for the Sewanee Symphony Orchestra. Led by Joseph Lee, the orchestra comprises more than 50 student, faculty and community musicians. The Sewanee Chorale, directed by Gary Sturgis, is an all-volunteer ensemble of 40-plus singers.

Dr. Luwin M. Lewis, a member of the chorale, says the ambitious work is "raising the musical experience bar in Sewanee. An extraordinary amount of dedication and effort by our choral members has gone into this challenging performance."

Soprano Susan Rupert will be the featured soloist. The program also marks the world premiere of Sewanee professor James Carlson's "Cricket & Snail Concertino," a work for violin, accordion and orchestra. It will feature Carlson and his wife, Lucie, as soloists. The third piece will be Rimsky-Korsakov's monumental "Capriccio Espagnol."

The free concert begins at 7:30 p.m. CDT in Guerry Auditorium, 735 University Ave. (at Alabama Street) on the University of the South campus. For details, call 866-334-2954.
