Chattanooga Now UTC presents 'A Movement for Rosa'

February 21st, 2013 by Staff Report in Chattnow Music

The UTC Music Department will celebrate the 100th birthday of civil-rights pioneer Rosa Parks on Wednesday, Feb. 27, with a concert of classic and contemporary band music. Mark Camphouse's "A Movement for Rosa," to be presented by the UTC Concert Band, "paints a portrait in sound," according to organizers.

Selections trace Parks' life from her early years through the turbulence of the 1950s and '60s, when she became known as "Mother to a Movement" after refusing to give up her seat to a white man on a segregated bus in Montgomery, Ala.

Included in the program are works by Aaron Copland, the hymn "We Shall Overcome" and Franco Goldman's "Chimes of Liberty" march.

The Concert Band is directed by Dr. Robert Dean.

The concert starts at 7:30 p.m. in the Roland Hayes Concert of the Fine Arts Center, 752 Vine St., on the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga campus. Admission is free.
