A small group of musicians within Second Presbyterian Church are tackling a sizable fundraiser.

Members of the Chancel Choir of the downtown church are launching a series of concerts on Friday night, July 19, with the goal of purchasing a new piano for the church sanctuary. The programs are all free, but donations will be collected at each performance to build the piano fund.

Friday's program is "Worship Through Song: A Musical Journey," says Dr. Kevin Ford, choir director. There will be no sermon, only the message heard through the music.

"The program will take listeners through music exploring times of fellowship, solitude, joy, sorrow, comfort, seeking, learning, planning, prayer, submission, awe, adoration and praise," says Ford.

The choir is composed of church members as well as alumni of the UTC Chamber Singers and Chattanooga Singers, which Ford also conducts.

The piano being replaced, a Sohmer baby grand, was purchased from the estate of Ken Keese by the church. Keese was a well-known local pianist and Second Presbyterian church member. Ford says since the late musician also wrote music, his plan is to include some of Keese's work in the series finale.
