EG Kight, whose music has been described as country-flavored, Southern-fried blues, will be featured in a concert presented by local pilots on Saturday, Oct. 19.
Considered one of the few true blues vocalists, Kight has worked two shows with BB King, appeared on NPR's "A Prairie Home Companion" and had her songs land on two of Koko Taylor's Grammy-nominated albums. Among her accolades are two Blues Blast award nominations in 2012 and six Blues Music Awards nominations, twice for Song of the Year.
The show is a fundraiser for the Moccasin Flying Club to help promote general aviation and protect the rights of private pilots in the area.
According to club spokesman Gene Perkins, many airfields are moving away from concerts and other events due to increased security measures. For instance, there hasn't been a fly-in at Lovell Field since the 1990s, he says.
In the meantime, "fuel costs are high, and the airport has added badge fees and ramp charges that tend to scare away most private pilots," he says.
"We are working on making general aviation attractive to a new generation of pilots by planning Saturday events like this, where participants can meet local pilots, get close to an airplane and ask questions."
The goal, he says, is that membership will be increased and public access to general aviation improved. Already, the club provides discovery flights for local schools, churches and Scout organizations. In the past, members have been involved with Pilots N Paws, an organization that relocates animals slotted to be euthanized to new homes, and Angel Flights, which provides air transportation to medical patients.
The $20 admission tickets may be purchased in advance at Bud's of Brainerd, which will provide a cash bar and food.
