Robinson RenardThe monthly WoodSongs Coffeehouse concert series continues Saturday, Feb. 22, at the Freight Depot in Dalton, Ga. Set to perform are the New Coon Creek Girls, a Kentucky-based bluegrass band, and Robinson Renard, known as "The Beacon of the Valley."
The New Coon Creek Girls were formed in 1979 by John Lair, the founder of Kentucky's famous Renfro Valley Entertainment Center. The new group carries on the traditional music that was played by the original Coon Creek Girls on Lair's "Barn Dance" radio show from the the 1930s to the 1960s.
The lineup of musicians has changed several times over the years. The current band features Pam Gadd on vocals, banjo and guitar; Wanda Barnett on vocals, guitar and fiddle; Vicki Simmons on vocals, bass and clawhammer banjo; and Pam Perry Combs on vocals, mandolin and guitar.
Robinson Renard, who plays piano and guitar, has been praised by Michael Gray, founder of The River City Sessions, a Chattanooga talent forum, for his "incredible voice ... finely crafted lyrics and stellar musicianship."
