Deacon Bluz and the Holysmoke Band ready to rock Riverfront Nights

Deacon Bluz and the Holysmoke Band will bring their danceable blues music to the next installment of Riverfront Nights. The concert series continues Saturday, July 30, at Ross's Landing, 200 Riverfront Parkway. Admission is free.

Opening act Robby Hopkins will lead off the music at 7 p.m. Hopkins of Spencer, Tenn., is a country artist who wrote his first song at age 16, has been named a Hot Songwriter To Watch by the Smoky Mountain Songwriters Festival and has won a Nashville Rising Star contest.

Deaconbluz and the Holysmoke Band will follow at 8 p.m. The band has been performing since 1997 under the direction of Clark "Deacon Bluz" White. Billing himself as "an organic public intellectual bluesologist," Clark directs Blues Chattanooga: Center for Blues Studies and helps produce the annual Blues in the Knob concerts sponsored by the Orchard Knob Neighborhood Watch Association.

He has taught at Michigan State University, Temple University, Northeastern University, Brown University and Morehouse College (his alma mater, class of 1971). He was also a visiting scholar at the WEB DuBois Center for African American Studies at Harvard University and the Delta Cultural and Research Center at Mississippi Valley State University.
