The Chattanooga State Community College Symphonic Band will present a free concert of music by American composers on April 18 at 7:30 p.m.

Two music ensembles at Chattanooga State Community College have scheduled concerts within the coming week. Both concerts are free and will be held in the auditorium of the Humanities Building on campus, 4501 Amnicola Highway.

The Chattanooga State Concert Choir will present a Masterworks program under the direction of Darrin Hassevoort on Friday, April 14, at 7:30 p.m.

The 30-voice choir will perform choral pieces by classical, American and contemporary composers, accompanied by a string quartet on some pieces.

Included in their program is a tribute to Roland Carter, who is marking his 75th birthday. Carter, a retired music professor at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga, is nationally known for his compositions.

"We are featuring some spirituals arranged by Roland Carter. Dr. Jennifer Arbogast, a faculty member, will be featured on 'You Must Have That True Religion.'" We're also doing some sacred works by Ola Gjeilo," says Hassevoort.

Music by American composers will be the theme of Chattanooga State Symphonic Band's concert on Tuesday, April 18, at 7:30 p.m. Nicholas Hartline will conduct the musicians.

Among pieces on the program will be "Appalachian Spring" by Aaron Copland and "Mambo" from "West Side Story," written by Leonard Bernstein.

Joining the 25 musicians will be featured artist Gordon James, principal French horn with the Chattanooga Symphony & Opera and the Huntsville Symphony Orchestra in Huntsville, Ala. He will play a movement from Richard Strauss's French horn concerto, says Hartline.

The Chattanooga State Percussion Ensemble, under the direction of David Pedigo, will be featured on one number in the program as well.
