Mountain Opry will celebrate its 38th anniversary on Friday, Sept. 1, with an expanded lineup of acts.

The show will start at 7 p.m., an hour earlier than normal, with eight acts to play. The opry is held in Walden Civic Center, 2501 Fairmount Pike on Signal Mountain.

"We have four hours of music instead of three on our anniversary. People like to come up for the show, and a lot of them know each other and visit," says organizer Ken Holloway. Holloway adds that visitors are welcome to bring their instruments to sit in on jam sessions.

Scheduled to play on the anniversary show are Ryan Stinson, Big Woods, Just Country, Cumberland Band, Mountain Cove, Just Us Gals, Mountain Road and Scenic City Ramblers. Each group will play a 25- to 30-minute set, he said.

Admission is free. For more information: 423-886-3252.

photo Just Us Gals is an all-female band that plays bluegrass, ragtime, gospel and country. It was formed by church organist Agene Parsons after she retired at age 62 and took an interest in learning mountain dulcimer, then hammered dulcinmer.
