Mandolin virtuoso Matt Flinner will close out this year's musical performances at Barking Legs Theater when his trio presents "Music du Jour" on Friday night, Dec. 8.

Flinner was a child prodigy on banjo, and quickly achieved acclaim on mandolin, winning the prestigious Winfield competition on banjo in 1990 and on mandolin the following year. He became known as one of the top musicians in acoustic music, blending bluegrass, jazz and classical elements into his own unique sound. His two solo CDs, "The View from Here" and "Latitude," are widely considered classics in the new acoustic/modern bluegrass style.

Performing with him at Barking Legs will be guitarist Ross Martin and bassist Eric Thorin.

"Their 'music du jour' concept is an amazing display of virtuosity," says Bruce Kaplan, Barking Legs music director. "They each compose an instrumental on the day of the show, learn the three pieces together and perform them that evening flawlessly."

Kaplan says Flinner and his trio have dazzled audiences around the globe, and Jazz Times describes him as "perhaps the most exciting and creative mandolin player on the scene today."
