The old saw that "if you can make it in New York, you can make it anywhere" is probably as true today as it ever was; but for a musician, Nashville also might hold the same distinction. It has been the place for players who have become the big fish in Smallville, USA, to move to prepare to conquer the world.

Often, they end up waiting tables to make ends meet only to learn the busboy is just as good or better than they are. Elliot Root singer Scott Krueger chuckles at the cliche, but admits there is more than a little truth to it.

"It's pretty crazy, there are so many incredible musicians here, but it's fun."

Which makes standing out difficult. It also can make finding three or four other like-minded and equally as talented musicians just as tough. Krueger said he feels luck played a part in the formation of Elliot Root, the band that will open the 2017 Riverfront Nights series on Saturday, July 15, at the 21st Century Waterfront.

He also said it was as much about chemistry as technical skill.

"It was a bit of trial and error," he said. "We worked with different lineups solidifying it. Everyone had a willingness to collaborate. We were not looking for a person who could play the most notes or was maybe the most technical, but artistically could bring the best art vibe out.

"We were not thinking too technically. We wanted to be comfortable with each other, not be afraid to look at new things."

Almost immediately after forming in 2009, the band managed to stand out in the crowded Nashville scene with its high-energy shows, distinctive sound with intelligent lyrics and ever-changing rhythms.

"We got lucky with some radio stations and some taste-makers in the city getting into us. We've been very fortunate to get Nashville behind us."

They would record two EPs and tour with Spearhead and the Zac Brown Band. They will release their first studio album, "Conjure," on Aug. 25. Krueger says the recording took about a year. He believes that has helped truly bring the band into focus.

"We didn't set goals, so there was no pressure. We didn't want to have things have to happen."

They had an idea of the direction they wanted to take, but also wanted to allow for things to happen naturally through experimentation.

"Because we took our time, we got to experiment with several styles over the year. With that space in between, you get to feel things out."

Riverfront Nights will take place over the next six Saturdays. The shows are free, and kid- and dog-friendly. On hand will be representatives from groups and businesses in the area that promote a healthy lifestyle.
