Area universities offer free musical performances by ensembles

Three, free musical performances are offered at area universities in the coming week.

University of Tennessee at Chattanooga

* Who: Faculty recital featuring Clint Schmitt, saxophone, and David Walters, piano.

* When: 7:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 6.

* Where: Fine Arts Center, 752 Vine St.

* The program: The concert will include music by American composers Paul Creston, John Harbison, Robert Muczynski and George Gershwin's "Three Preludes."

Southern Adventist University

* Who: SAU Wind Symphony.

* When: 7:30 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 8.

* Where: Collegedale Church of Seventh-day Adventists, 4829 College Drive.

* The program: Ken Parsons conducts the wind symphony in a concert with the theme "Fortress Facets: A Quincentennial Celebration of the Protestant Reformation" with works by Johann Sebastian Bach, Franz Doppler, Warren Benson, Eric Peel and more. Several pieces are based on Martin Luther's "A Mighty Fortress Is Our God."

Lee University

* Who: Lee Wind Ensemble.

* When: 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 10.

* Where: Conn Center, 150 11th St., Cleveland, Tenn.

* The program: Dr. David R. Holsinger, professor of music, directs the ensemble in traditional band literature for winds and percussion.
