Hats off to the Houston: Gala anniversary luncheon is Saturday

photo Carol Schaffeld, owner of Peaches Fine Millinery in Chickamauga, Ga., will showcase some of her hats at the Houston Museum's gala anniversary luncheon Saturday.

Ten hats worn by Blue-Cross BlueShield CEO Vicky Gregg at Kentucky Derbys will be among the chapeaux on display Saturday at the Houston Museum's gala anniversary luncheon at the Mountain City Club, 729 Chestnut St.

She's among seven prominent area women who are loaning 10 favorite hats each from their personal collections to be exhibited along with pieces from Peaches Fine Millinery in Chickamauga, Ga., the shop of award-winning milliner Carol Schaffeld.

"We chose a hats theme because we're celebrating the museum's 50th anniversary and the 135th birthday of its benefactor, Anna Safley Houston, who was a milliner before she was an antiques dealer," said Suzanne Caplenor, Houston Board president.

Others providing hats are radio commentator Rabbit Zielke; educators Betts Berry and Dr. Mary Barker; and community volunteers Linda Friberg, Prestine Huckabay and Betty Ewing.

The luncheon will begin with a social hour at 11:30 a.m. Lunch will be served at 12:30 p.m. Tickets are $50, and reservations are required.

Guests are encouraged to wear hats if they wish, but it's not mandatory.

"Between the royal wedding, Easter and the Kentucky Derby, we think many women will be in a hats mood," Caplenor said.
