Chattanooga Market officials hope residents will support one of their own Sunday.

The Tennessee Army National Guard 230th Sustainment Brigade, based at the National Guard Armory on 23rd Street, is deployed in support of Operation New Dawn and Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan.

The market's Support Our Troops theme invites marketgoers to fill bins with items requested by the outfit.

Marketing director Melissa Siragusa said the theme is appropriate for the July Fourth weekend.

The collection will be organized by First Tennessee Bank and Executive Women International.

Siragusa said she hoped area residents will support local soldiers and buy local foods at the open-air market.

Most of the requested items are foodstuffs and personal items.

Siragusa said peaches should be the week's biggest hit, but blackberries, tomatoes, greens, beans, lettuces and herbs should be plentiful.

Some of the lettuce and herbs have been grown hydroponically, she said, including "the biggest basil I've ever seen."

Entertainment for the afternoon will be provided by Atlanta vocalist and keyboard player Kurt Scobie at 12:30 p.m. and Cherokee recording artist Michael Jacobs at 2 p.m.

Scobie says on his website he has been influenced by Mat Kearney, Dave Matthews and Jason Mraz, while Jacobs' songs are said to address issues such as peace, justice, suffering, the environment, relationships and wellness.
