When a 10-year-old boy shaves his head in support of children battling cancer, others become inspired to do the same.
On Sunday, Chattanooga Market will highlight the youngster, Jack Skowronnek, now 13, who first shaved his head three years ago to raise awareness and funds for Children's Hospital at Erlanger and its Pediatric Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders.
Soon after, he and his mom, Dawn Skowronnek, established Jack's Chattanoggins, an organization that raises money for the hospital's life-saving pediatric cancer treatment.
For the second year, Chattanooga Market will host Jack's Chattanoggins in an effort to raise money for the hospital. Last year, more than $18,000 was raised, with more than 60 volunteers getting their heads shaved.
Advance registration is not required.
"Anyone can participate, and walk-ups are welcome," said market spokeswoman Melissa Siragusa. "People who sign up ahead of time are encouraged to raise money."
Licensed stylists from Fantastic Sam's have volunteered to shave the heads of volunteers. However, those interested in raising funds through donations as "shavees" can register to participate at JacksChattanoggins.org.
