Volunteer opportunity at Humane Society

The Humane Educational Society has an option for those interested in volunteering their time and talents for the MLK Day of Service, a challenge by the civil-rights leader to do something for others.

Volunteers are needed Monday, Jan. 21, at HES, 212 N. Highland Park Ave., to build dog beds for animals awaiting forever homes.

"These beds keep our dogs warm and dry and off the hard concrete floor, as well as provide orthopedic support," says a news release.

Work hours are 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Those who have them are asked to bring drills, Phillips drill bits and screwdrivers, channel locks, hammers and heavy-duty scissors. Also, donations of 11/4-inch PVC pipe are welcome.

The goal is to complete 100 beds. In addition to new beds, there are existing beds that need repair and replacement parts. Donations of $15 can buy the needed parts for each bed.

Volunteers are asked to RSVP to hesvolunteer@comcast.net. For more information, call 624-5302 or visit www.HESChatt.com.
