Following Halloween's sugar high and just before the holiday feeding frenzy, November is national Diabetes Awareness Month. The University of Tennessee and Tennessee State University local extensions have planned two diabetes education events for this month.

The first event is a luncheon designed for people with pre-diabetes and diabetes as well as caregivers, health care staff and health coordinators in faith-based organizations. Tonya Swoape will be the guest presenter. According to a press release, participants will be eligible to win gift cards, but "everyone is a winner who practices ways to manage diabetes."

The second event this month is a "Take Charge of Your Diabetes" class that begins November 6 and runs through December 11. This program aims to teach participants to implement goal setting and changes in behaviors to manage diabetes. Topics will include common problems with diabetes, self-management tools, healthy eating, facts about carbohydrates, preventing and delaying diabetes complications, dealing with anger, and ways to communicate with your doctor. Healthy snacks will be served at each session.

All programs are free, but space is limited and preregistration is required.
