Publicity director Ann Raines reports that 965 dogs are entered in competition Saturday, Sept. 14, and 969 on Sunday, Sept. 15, at Camp Jordan, 315 Camp Jordan Parkway in East Ridge. Add in Junior Showmanship entries, in which children's handling abilities rather than the dogs they are showing are judged, and total entries go up to 989 on Saturday and 993 on Sunday.
"The kids are very competitive and quite serious about the event," Raines says. "Many of the top professional dog handlers in the country started in Junior Showmanship."
Breed judging will start at 8 a.m. each day, and group judging by 2 to 2:30 p.m. Best-in-Show judging usually begins between 3:30 and 4 p.m., but times are approximate based on the number of entries and speed of the judges.
Raines says the shows are a chance to see "some of the best canines in the Southeast and the country."
"Many people have seen the Westminster dog show on television," she says. "This is an opportunity for the community to see how an AKC dog show really works."
The CKC, a member of the American Kennel Club, was founded in 1934. Membership primarily comprises people who own and show purebred dogs.
