Congregants of Daisy United Methodist, known around Soddy-Daisy as "the church with the flowers," hope to share the "fruits" of their green thumbs during their third annual plant giveaway Saturday, April 5.
Thanks to the vision of a gardening church member, the grounds have been transformed into a floral showplace awash in color from spring to fall. Church members are eager to help others beautify their yards by giving away flowers, herbs, ornamental plants and vegetables.
"Our church is constantly looking for ways to share God's love and bounty with the community, and part of our Christian belief is that we should be good stewards of the natural world," says lay leader Bill Haley. "We feel this novel idea is a good way to do that and meet our neighbors at the same time."
Haley says church members have donated lots of plants for the giveaway.
"Some will be seedlings, some are divisions of mature flowers and some are volunteers that sprang up where folks didn't need more plants," he says.
While donations may be made in exchange for plants, Haley stresses that the event is not a sale.
"There will be a limit on how many plants one family can take home, but all the plants are free," he says. "If someone wishes to make a monetary donation to help fund future community-outreach events such as this, it will be gladly accepted but is certainly not required."
The giveaway will take place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Daisy UMC is at 9508 Old Dayton Pike (less than a half-mile north of the Soddy-Daisy Walmart). For more information, call 423-326-9248.
