Dr. John W. SteinbergDays of Remembrance, the annual commemoration of the Holocaust, will be observed nationally next week, April 27-May 4. Local events include a community service of readings, music and prayers, presented by the Jewish Federation of Greater Chattanooga on Sunday at the Jewish Cultural Center.
According to spokeswoman Ann Treadwell, the annual Yom HaShoah (Holocaust Remembrance) observance will begin at 3 p.m. with the reading of names of victims by members of the community. The observance will continue at 4 p.m. with the participation of Holocaust survivors, their children, grandchildren and children of concentration-camp liberators.
This year the observance will include a keynote address by Dr. John W. Steinberg on "Memory and the Holocaust in Germany and Poland in the 21st Century." Steinberg is the chair of the Department of History and Philosophy at Austin Peay State University.
He was a Research Fellow at the Center for Advanced Holocaust Studies at the U.S. Holocaust Memorial and Museum and trained as a Holocaust educator by the Holocaust Education Foundation. He has directed a Holocaust study tour to Berlin and Krakow and is engaged in ongoing research on the role of collaborators in the Soviet Union during the Holocaust, in addition to his substantial research into the history of Russia.
