Children's museum honors military with 21 geyser salute

photo The Creative Discovery Museum will offer a 21-geyser salute to the area's military families during Red, White and Blue Day on Friday. A representative from each of the five main branches of the U.S. military will be selected to take part in the salute, which involves dropping Mentos candies into 2-liter bottles of Diet Coke.

Creative Discovery Museum will celebrate America's birthday with a party that includes the crowd-pleasing 21-geyser salute, an eye-popping effect accomplished with Mentos candies and 2-liter bottles of Diet Coke.

Red, White and Blue Day activities will be offered between noon and 4 p.m. Friday, July 4. The museum will be open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Museum guests will start the festivities by creating July Fourth-inspired crafts. Then at 2 p.m. visitors will gather for a reading of the Declaration of Independence by Thomas Jefferson and Uncle Sam characters, followed by child-friendly "bubble wrap" fireworks and a balloon drop. Immediately following these activities will be the geyser salute in honor of the military personnel who have served the nation. Then a "Happy Birthday America" cake and ice cream will be served in the museum plaza.

"Red White and Blue Day is one of the few opportunities in our community for children and adults to participate in activities that explore the historical reason for the holiday," says Jayne Griffin, the museum's director of education. "We hope families will take a moment away from picnics, parades and those other wonderful traditional celebrations to attend the museum's birthday party for America.

As part of the celebration, free admission to the museum will be granted Friday to all active-duty military families when military ID is presented (limit two adults and two children). All activities are included with paid admission to the museum.
