The Southern Literature Alliance is extending an open invitation to join the So Lit Book Club, which will hold its inaugural meeting Wednesday, July 16. The discussion of Clyde Edgerton's "Raney" will take place between 6 and 8 p.m. at the Chattanooga Public Library, 1001 Broad St.

"Raney" tells the story of a young couple -- Raney Bell, a small-town Baptist, and Charles Shepherd, a liberal from Atlanta -- drawn together by their mutual love of bluegrass music. The book opens on the eve of their wedding and follows the newlyweds as they try to find harmony in their discordant viewpoints. Critics have described the book as entertaining and thought-provoking.

The Southern Lit Alliance, formerly the Arts & Education Council, is an organization dedicated to celebrating Southern writers and readers through innovative literary arts experiences. Its other programs include Artamajig, its annual fundraiser, set for Thursday, July 31, and the biannual Celebration of Southern Writers, next scheduled for April 16-19, 2015.

Copies of "Raney" can be found in bookstores and at online sites such as Amazon.com and half.com.

Admission to the event is free, but seating is limited. To reserve a seat, call 423-267-1218 or email AJohnson@SouthernLit Alliance.org.
