A North Alabama town that made international headlines in 1989 for numerous sightings of unidentified flying objects will celebrate its status as the UFO Capital of the World with its signature festival, Fyffe UFO Day, on Saturday, Aug. 27.

The DeKalb County, Ala., town retains a good-natured embrace of its reputation as a UFO mecca, but these days UFO stands for Unforgettable Family Outing, and the flying objects are hot-air balloons over Sand Mountain.

The 12th annual festival also will feature an array of arts and crafts vendors, antique cars and tractors, games for kids and an entertainment roster that encompasses gospel, country, rock, Motown and bluegrass music.

Headlining the festival is country singer Jamie O'Neal, who had back-to-back No. 1 singles in 2000 with "There Is No Arizona" and "When I Think About Angels." The four-time Grammy nominee also scored hits with "Shiver," "Tryin' To Find Atlantis" and "Somebody's Hero."

Hot-air balloon rides are $200 per person. They may be booked through Jeff Maddox at 256-461-8612 or rides@ballooningAL.com.
