A 1999 movie that was filmed mostly in Mentone, Ala., will be shown on the big screen Friday, Aug. 26, at the Mentone Inn pavilion, 6139 Alabama Highway 117.

"Southern Heart," directed by and starring Peter DeLuise, is part of the second annual Free Outdoor Movie Night presented by the Mentone Business Association.

The movie screening will be preceded by an open-air concert on the lawn by Jerry Bloom.

The concert will start at 5:30 p.m., and the movie will begin just after dark, around 7:45 p.m. (all times are Central). The movie's run time is one hour and 35 minutes.

In the film, DeLuise plays Collin Jacobs, a rising executive in his family's strip-mining company who is dispatched to Alabama to buy a piece of land for mining. What begins as a routine business deal becomes anything but when Collin falls under the spell of the rural surroundings, the odd charm of the locals and a woman (Jamie Hendrix Collins) who supervises a camp for the physically challenged. Collin must decide whether to do his job or follow his heart.

Filming locations included the Mentone Springs Hotel, Mentone Inn, Nippersink Lodge, Log Cabin Deli (now Greenleaf Grill) and Cragsmere Manor, according to the MBA. Many Mentone area resident were used as extras in the film. Fans of Victoria Galen can catch the Chattanooga-based actress in the role of Veronica Walters.

Free popcorn will be available. A concession stand will offer hot dogs, soft drinks, chips and ice cream for sale. Blankets and lawn chairs are recommended for seating.
