'An American Ascent' follows first-time adventurers up Denali

The award-winning film "An American Ascent" will be screened today, Feb. 11, in the Robert Kirk Walker Community Theatre at Memorial Auditorium, 399 McCallie Ave. Before the free screening, officials with Outdoor Chattanooga and the city's Office of Multicultural Affairs will introduce the new group of multicultural, multilingual outdoor ambassadors tasked with getting more people of color outside. Statistics show that the United States will become a majority-minority nation within a few decades, yet "a staggering number of these people do not consider the outdoors as a place for them," according to a news release. The film is the story of nine African-Americans who set out in June 2013 to become role models for inner-city children and people of color all over America by tackling North America's highest peak, Denali. Events are scheduled between 5:30 and 8:30 p.m. For more information, email outdoorchattanooga@gmail.com.
