Puzzle too long over this weekend's Fire in the Valley Red Bank BBQ - to be held not in Red Bank but in East Ridge - and you might cause yourself a headache.

Suffice to say, the Friday and Saturday event, June 3-4, outgrew its intended home at the old Red Bank Middle School property and has moved to the larger space at Camp Jordan.

That alone has caused a few headaches for Eric McRoy of the sponsoring Red Bank Foundation, a new community-minded consortium of about 50 businesses. But he says Camp Jordan's 275 acres means there's room to spare for the 45 professional grill masters and 27 (at last count) backyard barbecuers coming for this Kansas City Barbeque Society sanctioned event.

Particularly with the KCBS affiliation, the fundraiser has been a massive undertaking, McRoy says. He's heard a few grumblings about the relocation from a few whose civic pride has been wounded. But the payoff will come in the end with money raised for education, needy children and the community at large.

"It still benefits Red Bank schools," he says, "but this way we raise even more money."

In a gesture of goodwill, the Red Bank Foundation also will donate a portion of proceeds to the East Ridge Fire & Police Needy Child Fund, McRoy says.

Teams are expected to being arriving by early Friday afternoon. Gates will be open to the public from 6 to 10 p.m.

Saturday hours are 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and will include a free kids zone and car show. Registered vehicles will be allowed to enter at 7:30 a.m., same-day registrants at 8.

Teams will begin turning in their meats - chicken, ribs, pork and brisket - on the half hour, starting at noon. Prizes will be awarded at 4 p.m. Payouts add up to $20,000 to the top professional teams, $5,000 for the backyard cooks. The professional winner also gets an automatic entry into the World Food Championships in Orange Beach, Ala., in November. The Food Network will be on-site filming this weekend.

Bands will entertain both days. Scheduled to perform are Mountain Cove Bluegrass, Bartlee Norton & 64 Highway, Planet, Krystye Dalton and the Power Players.
