New Year's Eve falls on a Sunday this year, but families don't have to hurry from church services or give up Sunday brunch to celebrate with the staff of the Creative Discovery Museum, 321 Chestnut St.

The CDM's annual New Year's Eve celebration for kids, New Year's at Noon, will be held at its usual noon to 4 p.m. time on Sunday, Dec. 31. But in order to better accommodate families, the New Year's countdown has been moved later into the afternoon to bring in 2018 at 2:18 p.m.

Children attending the celebration will learn about the passage of time using traditional adult activities presented in a child-friendly way, such as an apple juice toast and a kazoo rendition of the classic "Auld Lang Syne."

Guests will gather in the CDM Atrium at 1:55 p.m. to start a countdown with Father Time's descent down the stairs, complete with a colorful confetti drop at 2:18.

At 3 p.m., Father Time will lead guests in an energetic dance party followed by indoor "fireworks" (stomping on yards of bubble wrap.) Children can also make hats, wands and shakers throughout the party hours.

"Our New Year's celebration is a great way to celebrate the New Year with kids," says Jayne Griffin, museum director of education. "The event allows children to experience the passage of time and a traditional adult event in a fun, child-friendly setting."

All activities are included with admission to the museum of $13.95 for nonmembers, free to members.
