Honoring our veterans: Ceremonies, concerts and meal deals on tap this weekend

Veterans Day is Saturday, Nov. 11, the day set aside to honor all who have served in the military.

As is tradition, a Veterans Day ceremony will be held at the Chattanooga National Cemetery on Saturday at 11 a.m. The cemetery is located at 1200 Bailey Ave.

Throughout this weekend, even into Monday, a variety of concerts, complimentary dinners, discounted meals and other gestures of appreciation are being offered to those who have worn a uniform. Here's an overview of what's happening around town.

APPRECIATION DINNERS

» Nov. 10: Ridgedale Baptist Church, 1831 Hickory Valley Road, 6 p.m., free for veterans, $8 all others, color guard provided by Hixson High School Junior ROTC, speaker is Col. Tom McConnell, West Point graduate and director of Hamilton County Schools' ROTC program. For tickets: 423-499-0994.

» Nov. 11: Hee Haw Salute to Veterans, Alhambra Shrine auditorium, 1000 Alhambra Drive, 5:30 p.m., $15, veterans eat free, dinner followed by patriotic show presented by Alhambra Shriners Ladies Helping Hands. 423-875-9736.

FLU SHOTS

» Nov. 11: American Family Care locations at 3520 Cummings Highway, 1521 Gunbarrel Road, 9058 Old Lee Highway and 170 Mouse Creek Road in Cleveland, Tenn., free flu shots to veterans with valid ID during regular clinic hours. Veterans should contact their nearest AFC clinic before leaving home to make sure it is participating.

FREE ADMISSION

» Nov. 11: Point Park, 8:30 a.m.-7 p.m., entrance fee waived; ranger-guided tours at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. 423-752-7521.

» Nov. 11: Museum Center at Five Points, 200 E. Inman St., Cleveland, Tenn., veterans and their families receive free admission to exhibits.

MUSIC

» Nov. 9: Chattanooga School for the Arts and Sciences, 865 East Third St., 7 p.m., free, Jericho Brass Band partners with CSAS band for concert of patriotic music.

» Nov. 11: Memorial Auditorium, 399 McCallie Ave., 7:30 p.m., free and open to the public. Chattanooga Symphony & Opera presents a Veterans Day concert that will include the national anthem, "Chattanooga Choo-Choo," an Armed Forces salute to all military branches, "Battle Hymn of the Republic" and "Taps." The Lee Singers of Lee University will join the CSO to perform "America the Beautiful."

MEALS AND DEALS

» Nov. 10: Firebirds, 2107 Gunbarrel Road, dine with a veteran or active-duty service member and their lunch or dinner is free. Free entree must be equal to or less than the purchased entree. Reservations: 423-308-1090.

» Nov. 11: Krystal restaurants, 6-11 a.m., free sausage biscuit to any person who presents a military ID (including those in uniform) while supplies last, no other purchase necessary. Offer may not be combined with other coupons or discounts.

» Nov. 11: O'Charley's restaurants, all veterans and active-duty personnel receive a free "$9.99er" entree.

» Nov. 13: Golden Corral restaurants' Military Appreciation Night, 5-9 p.m., free meal for veterans and active-duty military. Call your local Golden Corral before leaving home to make sure it is participating and whether a form of identification is required. Dine-in only.

RECEPTION

» Nov. 11: Meigs County Historical Museum, 200 Smith Ave., Decatur, Tenn., noon-2 p.m., free reception honoring all veterans with special displays. 423-334-4424.
