Independence Day's patriotic spirit spills over to this weekend when Stars & Stripes at the Depot takes place in Summerville, Georgia, on Saturday, July 7.

Fun, food and photos are on tap at the Summerville Depot, 119 E. Washington St., from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. during this block party filled with old-fashioned Americana. It is hosted by Summerville Main Street.

Guests are invited to bring a picnic lunch or purchase lunch from a vendor for the patriotic picnic at the depot, says Susan Locklear, director of Summerville Main Street. There will be free sliced watermelon while supplies last. Bring your camera for photo-ops with Uncle Sam.

What's more American than apple pie? A Fried Apple Pie contest. Local cooks are invited to enter and can register inside the depot between 11 and 11:30 a.m.

Fried pies should be made in advance, with three fried pies presented for judging at registration. Contestants may also sell any flavor or variety of fried pies at the event. Winners will be announced at 2 p.m.

A party highlight is always the arrival of the Tennessee Valley Railroad Museum passenger train at the depot about 1 p.m., and the turning of its majestic steam engine on the Summerville turntable.
