The Chattanooga alumnae chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc., in collaboration with Deltas Serving Together Inc., will present Jabberwock on Saturday, March 17.

Jabberwock is the sorority's triennial scholarship pageant for girls in grades 2 to 12, which is designed as a fundraiser for Delta Sigma Theta's service projects.

"Inspiring Dreams to Ignite the Community" is the theme of Saturday's Jabberwock. The event will begin at 4 p.m. in Redemption to the Nations church, 1908 Bailey Ave.

Pageant participants will be grouped as Little Miss (grades 2-5), Junior Miss (grades 6-8) and Miss (grades 9-12).

New this year, a Jabberwock Beauties and Beaus fashion show for males and females ages 7 and younger has been added. Participants will make their debut modeling either formalwear, church or play clothes.

The Jabberwock title is taken from Lewis Carroll's "Alice in Wonderland." The first Jabberwock was presented in 1926 in Boston by members of the Iota chapter as an effort to raise money for the chapter's scholarship fund. The idea was conceived as a variety show of skits, dances and songs, and a pageant competition for prizes in varying amounts.

In Chattanooga, the first Jabberwock was presented by the members of Beta Epsilon Sigma (now the Chattanooga alumnae chapter) in February 1949.

Tickets are $30 adults, $10 for pre-K through 12th-grade students.
