Because of a host of ecological challenges in their native Madagascar, more than 100 species of lemurs are endangered to one degree or another. As a group, they are the world's most-imperiled class of mammal.

But one day every year, people the world over are encouraged to appreciate these acrobatic creatures and learn more about their unique adaptations and the threats they face.

World Lemur Day is Saturday, Oct. 20, and visitors to the Tennessee Aquarium's Ocean Journey building will enjoy a packed schedule of special events and programs highlighting the Aquarium's ring-tailed and red-ruffed lemurs. Several other animals native to Madagascar will be featured as well.

Meet animal experts in the Tropical Cove Gallery for up-close-and-personal encounters with lemurs, colorful panther chameleons, enormous radiated tortoises and the Madagascar hissing cockroach. Leaping Lemurs animal programs will be held at 10:30 a.m. and 3 p.m.

During the rest of the day, visitors may snap pics in a special photo booth, snag a hug with a roaming lemur mascot and craft lemur masks.

World Lemur Day activities are free with regular Aquarium admission between 10:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. Admission is $29.95 adults, $18.95 children ages 3-12.

Guests wanting to take home a souvenir will find special paintings made by the lemurs in the Aquarium's gift shop. There are also fair-trade goods in the gift shop that were made by Malagasy artisans. A portion of sales of these goods will benefit the Aquarium's partnership with the international Madagascar Fauna and Flora Group.
