VW plant work moves ahead

Volkswagen officials say they are moving ahead with construction of a $1 billion auto assembly plant in Chattanooga.

Work is expected to start on three key buildings at the plant - the body shop, assembly building and training center - this year.

The factory's $30 million paint shop, on which building started this winter, is expected to be weather tight in September. Workers will then begin putting equipment inside the structure.

VW, local and state officials continue to woo supplier companies to provide parts for the car to be made at the facility.

Hiring of the estimated 1,600 manufacturing workers at the plant is expected to kick off in the first half of 2010.
