McKamey competes in national contest

Staff and volunteers at the McKamey Animal Care and Adoption Center were celebrating last Tuesday after learning McKamey was in sixth place in the $100K Challenge sponsored by the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.

Karen Walsh, director of the center, said McKamey is the newest shelter competing in the challenge. The contest encourages shelters to increase the live release rate of animals during August, September and October of this year, compared to the same months last year. McKamey is one of 50 shelters chosen from 700 in the country to participate in the contest. The winning shelter will receive $125,000 in prize money.

"It's all about saving animals," Walsh said.

Here's what people in the community can do to help McKamey nab first place.

* Adopt a pet. All of McKamey's animals are spayed/neutered, microchipped and up-to-date on vaccinations, flea treatment and heartworm preventative. View animals at mckameyanimalcenter.org.

* Spay a stray. Schedule an appointment to spay/neuter stray or feral cats. The cost for two females is $25. The procedure is free for male cats.

* ID your pet for life. McKamey offers $25 microchipping.
