'Annie' at GPS

The performing arts department of Girls Preparatory School will present the Broadway musical "Annie" in three performances this weekend. The production features students from both GPS and McCallie School.

"Annie," which won the Tony Award for Best Musical, is based on the Harold Gray comic strip "Little Orphan Annie." It features the well-known songs "Tomorrow" and "It's the Hard-Knock Life."

Starring in the title role is GPS senior Sarah Thomas. Andrew Zellner, a McCallie junior, portrays Daddy Warbucks.

The musical is directed by Suzanne Smartt, assisted by Catherine Bolden. Both are theater teachers at GPS and award-winning actors who were honored earlier this week with Unbought & Unbossed Awards by Girls Inc. The musical's orchestra is directed by Mary Baxter, director of instrumental music at GPS.

Shows start at 7 p.m. today and Saturday and at 2:30 p.m. Sunday in Frierson Theatre on the GPS campus, 205 Island Ave.

Tickets, priced at $8 and $12, will be on sale in the theater lobby 90 minutes before each performance.
