Gotta dance? Gotta sing? Gotta paint? Gotta act?

The Salvation Army is looking for you.

And the Chattanooga Corps 614's ReCreate Café would love you to check out the space for just such art on Saturday.

The Café's Psalms of the City event will showcase several examples of the type of art it would like to host on a regular basis and offer artists and other community members the chance to ask any questions about a potential use of the space.

"We want people to see a vision of what we want it to be," said event coordinator Tenika Dye. "We want the homeless and the housed, regardless of where they are, to understand this is a place to experience art. The Salvation Army believes strongly in that and in providing it to the community."

Among the examples of art, which for this event incorporates biblical psalms, are a short video on Chattanooga by Gaye Jeffers, a tissue/recycled paper flower vase by Judith Williams, a dance by Center Stage Dance Company's Flames of Virtue dance troupe and several original pieces by actor Jonathan Nichols.

The vase, for instance, incorporates Psalm 30, which says in part, "Weeping may endure for a night, but joy comes in the morning." The dance troupe will perform with the theme of the familiar Psalm 23.

The open-house event, according to Dye, takes "baby steps" to where Recreate Café wants to be but will allow artists and others an opportunity to visit the performance/gallery space and "see a vision of what we want it to be."

"We're just wanting people to know where [we are], to interact [with us] and know we're building something here," she said. "I think that's an accomplishment."

Refreshments will be served at the free event.
