The first of two artists featured in this season's Diane Marek Visiting Artist Series will be in Chattanooga next week. Matthew Deleget's four-day visit to the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga will be highlighted by a public lecture at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday in Room 356 of the UTC Fine Arts Center, 752 Vine St. An informal reception will follow in the lobby. (Visitors after 5 p.m. may park in any UTC lot not marked as 24-hour reserved).
Deleget also will take part in two hour-long programs in the UTC Fine Arts Center: a process and materials presentation at 11 a.m. Wednesday in Room 356 and a professionalism panel at 1:40 p.m. Thursday in Cress Gallery.
The Diane Marek Visiting Artist Series, now in its seventh year, was begun by the local arts advocate to bring visual artists of national reputation to Chattanooga for an intensive schedule of events over multiple days with students and the community. In conjunction with the artists' visits, UTC's Cress Gallery of Art organizes an exhibition of each artist's work.
Deleget's "Pictures at an Exhibition," featuring two- and three-dimensional work created especially for Cress Gallery, will open immediately after his lecture and run through Dec. 7. Deleget is co-founder of the gallery Minus Space in Brooklyn, N.Y. His reductive abstraction works merge painting with conceptual, process and installation strategies.
Summer Wheat will follow as the series' spring visiting artist, with activities scheduled Feb. 11-14.
