A reading of "8 the Play" will be offered at 7 p.m. Friday, Feb. 7, at Unitarian Universalist Church, 3224 Navajo Drive.

This new work by Academy Award-winning screenwriter Dustin Lance Black ("Milk," "J. Edgar") examines the legal arguments that led to the overturn of Proposition 8, an amendment that eliminated the right of same-sex couples to marry in California.

The play covers the arguments for and against Prop 8. The same arguments are likely to be refined and replayed as the U.S. Supreme Court reviews Proposition 3 banning same-sex marriage in Utah, according to presenters with the American Foundation for Equal Rights and Broadway Impact.

A question-and-answer session will follow the 90-minute reading. Admission is free, though donations are welcome.
