Weekend mashup: Feb. 14-16

That '90s LOVE Show at Rhythm & Brews - Feb. 14, 9:30 p.m.

Even if you're unattached - maybe especially if you are - there's an element of mystery and craziness in the air on Valentine's Day. The cover song experts of That '90s Show will provide the perfect platform for dancing out your aggression, confusion, or sorrow tonight at That '90s LOVE Show at Rhythm and Brews. They promise an unpredictable set (check out Casey Phillips' story and interview with the collective here.). Maybe you will find that proverbial rose in your locker from your home room crush, but if you don't, at least you'll be in a crowd to dance out your disappointment.

photo Performances of "The Vagina Monologues" are slated for Friday at 7 p.m. and Saturday at 2 p.m.

For those of us who just can't seem to buy into the capital-driven manufactured romance agenda that is Valentine's Day, there are a few events tonight that appeal to an alternative, irreverent sensibility that doesn't involve staying home and boycotting it all.

The Broken Hearts Ball is a benefit for the Partnership for Families, Children and Adults Rape Crisis Center and includes drinks, food, dancing and music. Seems like a great place to meet a compassionate, like-minded somebody. The Tennessee Valley Pride Same Love Safe Love Valentine's Gala is all about supporting the LGBTQ community, and "The Vagina Monologues" at UTC pays homage to a word most people are still a little squeamish about saying. The proceeds from the show go to The Transformation Project, a non-profit that works with addicts, and The Partnership, whose more than 20 programs do a lot of good. If you've never seen "The Vagina Monologues," you really should. Bonus points if you're a girl who can get your boyfriend to join you.

The Bar-Kays at Mocha Lounge - Saturday

The Memphis-based Bar-Kays were a funk powerhouse in the '60s and '70s with hits like "Soul Finger," "Shake Your Rump to the Funk" and "Boogie Body Land." If you're planning a date, prove your coolness by bringing them to Mocha Lounge for this show on Saturday. But you should probably study up on your dance moves by watching this video first, because it might just be a "Freakshow on the Dance Floor."
