Playhouse extends Scopes play in Dayton, 'Smoke' in Crossville

Cumberland County Playhouse is extending the runs of two shows its producing.

¦ "Front Page News," a production mounted last weekend as part of the Scopes Trial Festival in Dayton, Tenn., will have three more performances at the Rhea County Courthouse, 1475 Market St. The added performances start at 2:30 and 7:30 p.m. Saturday, July 26, and at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, July 27 (times are Eastern).

Bobby Taylor is "The Storyteller," George Miller is William Jennings Bryan and Rick Dye is Clarence Darrow in "Front Page News."

"'Front Page News' opened with great success and played to sold-out audiences during its first weekend," says MainStreet Dayton director Anna Tromanhouser.

The show was adapted and directed for 2014 by the Playhouse's Jim Crabtree, with new music and lyrics by Grammy-nominated songwriter Bobby Taylor from the original 2013 script by playwright Deborah Harbin.

¦ "Smoke on the Mountain," a favorite of Playhouse audiences, has been held over through Oct. 4. The gospel musical was originally scheduled to close on Aug. 8.

Also playing are "Shrek: The Musical," through Aug. 31, and the classic Broadway musical "Gpysy," through Sept. 5.
