Thirteen years ago, the unlikely duo of an engineer and a retired Salvation Army officer - who shared a common bond in their appreciation of brass band music - put out the call to local horn players that they were forming a local brass band.
Bill Kinnaman, the engineer, was a euphonium player who annually spent two weeks in England at a British band camp. The late Maj. Otis Street from the Salvation Army, a tuba player, also was immersed in the English brass-band tradition.
From their efforts grew the Jericho Brass, a community ensemble of experienced musicians.
To celebrate their anniversary, the Jericho Brass is hosting a free concert Sunday afternoon at First Cumberland Presbyterian Church.
Of particular interest to local brass players at Sunday's performance will be Dan Bowles' arrangement of the "Toccata" from Widor's Symphony No. 5 for organ and brass. The work will feature organist Bruce Clark.
"Also featured will be Shelby Walker, the band's virtuoso solo euphonium, performing the crowd-pleasing 'Blue Bells of Scotland,'" said Skip Houck, band member.
"The featured band selection will be 'Resurgam,' a challenging tone poem written for brass band by Eric Ball. This dramatic piece is a standard for fine brass bands worldwide," said Houck.
