Red Mountain, an old-time string band from Alabama, will take the stage Saturday at Barking Legs Theater.
The band specializes in high-energy dance tunes, old-school blues and early country classics from an era when the Carter Family and the Delmore Brothers were stars.
The musicians' expertise has garnered the band invitations to dance festivals across the country. At dances, they dip into their large repertoire of contra dance medleys and driving square-dance tunes. They learned many of their tunes from older fiddlers in Alabama and Tennessee, and they play in a style that reflects the region in which they live.
Often described as a wall of sound, the band features Jim Cauthen on fiddle, Joyce Cauthen on guitar, Phil Foster on mandolin, Jamie Finley on harmonica and banjo uke, Bill Martin on autoharp and Nancy Jackson on bass.

Red Mountain's second CD, "Chickens Don't Roost Too High," was rated the best old-time string band recording of 1999 by County Sales, an online source of bluegrass and old-time music. Their third, "Sweet Bama," was No. 2, trailing only Doc Watson's "Legacy."
