UTC summer chorale performs Thursday

Dr. Kevin Ford, director of choral activities at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga, auditions community singers each summer to take part in a chorus with UTC graduate music students.

Called the UTC Master Chorale, the chorus of about 40 singers will present a free concert culminating their six-week course on Thursday. The concert begins at 7:30 p.m. in Second Presbyterian Church, 700 Pine St. The singers will be accompanied by organist David Friberg.

The concert will open with the triumphant "God Is Gone Up" by British composer Gerald Finzi. Then "O Nata Lux" will begin an early music set that includes pieces by Portuguese composer Estêvão de Brito, German composer J.S. Bach and Czech composer Albin Maschek.

After David Friberg plays "Fiat Lux," the chorale will sing "Holy Radiant Light," "Gladsome Light," "Abendleid" and Johannes Brahms' "Waldesnacht."

The final set of music by American composers concludes with "Rise, Shine, for the Light is 'a-coming" by Roland Carter, UTC's Holmberg Professor of American Music.

Soloists for the evening will be tenor Harv Wileman and sopranos Sarah Marczynski and Gretchen Potts.

Graduate students serving as assistant conductors will be Brian Harris, Timothy Sunday, Sarah Tullock and Denise Adeniyi.
