Inventions on a chamber concert

Call it "something old, something new."

String Theory, the chamber music collaboration between Lee University and the Hunter Museum of American Art, continues this week with the premiere of Richard Danielpour's Grammy-winning composition "Inventions on a Marriage," written for guest artists Sharon Robinson (cello) and Jaime Laredo (violin).

Robinson and Laredo also will collaborate with pianist and String Theory artistic director Gloria Chien on three other pieces: Igor Stravinsky's Suite Italienne for Violin and Piano, Claude Debussy's Sonata for Cello and Piano, and Frederic Chopin's Introduction and Polonaise Brillante, Op. 3.

"String Theory has been a wonderful partnership with Lee University, and Gloria's work as artistic director (and as a performer) is amazing," Katrina Craven, director of marketing for the Hunter, wrote in an email. "We continue to hear how much people are enjoying the opportunity to hear world-class musicians in such a beautiful setting."

Married musicians Laredo and Robinson are faculty members at the Jacobs School of Music at Indiana University.

The evening will begin with a discussion led by Patrick Castillo, composer, writer, performer and educator. Castillo's work has been performed by such artists as Itzhak Perlman and Yo-Yo Ma.

Founder of the String Theory program, Chien is an associate professor at Lee University. She was named a Steinway artist in 2009.
