The Jericho Brass Band will close out its 14th season with a free concert Sunday afternoon at First Cumberland Presbyterian Church.
As explained by tenor horn player Jean Dickinson, The Jericho Brass is made up of "very dedicated brass and percussion musicians from every walk of life who spend two hours every Monday night -- for the rest of their lives -- in rehearsal at The Salvation Army Citadel on North Moore Road under the baton of Frank Hale and associate director Daniel A. Bowles.
"The band's commitment and dedication is best represented by the fellows who commute from Atlanta and Conyers, Ga., every Monday and for our numerous concerts each season."
In their heyday, at the turn of the previous century, brass bands were standard for every business and large company, according to Dickinson.
"Even the Chattanooga Post Office had a band," she said.
Their popularity declined with the advent of radio and movies, but in the last 10 years more brass bands have formed across the United States.
Opportunities to perform include a national competition each year by the North America Brass Band Association, as well as church services worldwide with The Salvation Army.
At Sunday's concert, The Jericho Brass will premier a new composition by Bowles, "Almighty Power," and accompany organist Bruce Clark in a performance of "Crown Imperial."
The program will be filled with a mixture of marches, sacred music and some pop selections, Dickinson said.
