Wah!, a music legend in the yoga world, will be in concert Sunday at Barking Legs Theater.
According to Annie Harpe, a local yoga instructor who is sponsoring the show, Wah! is an internationally known recording artist whose music "is a kind of bhakti or devotional practice."
"The wonderful thing about this kind of musical practice, called kirtan, is it is designed for the audience to participate," Harpe said in a news release. "So you don't just go and watch a performance; you get to be part of the band."
Wah! creates devotional music out of classic yogic chants, laced with Western folk and pop elements. Concerts include Sanskrit chanting, storytelling and songs in English. The music has been described as blissful, hip and Eastern-tinged, and the concert atmospheres are typically festive and jubilant.
"Wah! takes spiritual chanting and gives it a pop mentality, making it catchy and hypnotic," said a reviewer from Milwaukee's Music Design Magazine. Australian Yoga Life magazine said she "sings with the voice of a goddess."
