Grand Ole Opry regular John Conlee will head south Saturday, July 27, to headline Whitwell Summerfest.

He will be joined by musical acts On the Rock, Moonshine Cherry, Davey Smith and Arlo Gilliam as well as comedian Paul Aldrich.

Between 1978 and 2004, Conlee charted 32 singles on the Billboard Hot Country Songs charts, including seven that hit No. 1: "Lady Lay Down," "Backside of Thirty," "Common Man," "I'm Only in It for the Love," "In My Eyes," "As Long as I'm Rockin' With You" and "Got My Heart Set on You." Fourteen others, including "Rose Colored Glasses," made it into the Top 10.

His most recent releases are "Classics," containing his standards and a couple of new favorites, and "Turn Your Eyes Upon Jesus," an album of sacred songs.

Summerfest is a first-time event for Whitwell, and proceeds from the fundraiser will go to the city's Parks and Recreation Department.

Those attending may bring their own chairs for seating, but coolers are not allowed.

Gates open at 1 p.m., and entertainment starts at 2.

Tickets are $20 in advance, $25 at the gate. VIP packages, which include a T-shirt, designated parking and seating, and a free nonalcoholic drink, are $50.

They may be purchased at Whitwell City Hall and the Whitwell branches of Citizens Tri-County and First Volunteer banks.
