Love may be lauded or lamented through poetry tonight when Rhyme N Chatt hosts its annual Love Groove spoken-word show at Loose Cannon Studio.
"Love Groove is a chance for local people to showcase their talent," said Toni Farmer, Rhyme N Chatt member. "It's centered around poetry. We have a jazz band playing, Pure Sound, that backs up the readers, and they also play a set between readings."
Love Groove has become so popular that it has sold out for five years, according to Rhyme N Chatt's website. Club members aim to prove that audiences don't have to drive to Atlanta to find an upbeat, quality evening of poetry and jazz.
Another reason for Love Groove's success is that its interactive format allows audience members to respond to performers. Also, subject matter may not be offensive, nor is alcohol served. Food and beverages are sold at the event.
"It is an adult audience, but we try to keep the poetry PG-13. No profanity or vulgarity," said Marsha Morton-Mills, who will be tonight's emcee.
"Topics tonight will mostly be about love, but we realize not everyone is in love. So there may be a pack-your-bags-and-get-out-of-the house poem as well," she added.
Morton-Mills said tonight's performers will include Toni Farmer, Emily Heard, Carla Elliott, Angela Hoskins, Joshua Hubbard, Gail Dawson, Michelle Simon and Kenya Nobles.
Doors open a half-hour before the 8 o'clock show.
