Take A Hike...

Take to the trail this month to enjoy one of Chattanooga's most beloved outdoor locales- The Cumberland Trail.

"The Cumberland Trail as a whole is the best trail we have in Chattanooga, and the Rock Creek Gorge section is just phenomenal," says Ruth Thompson, event and marketing coordinator for Outdoor Chattanooga. "You have instant access to the woods right off the road. You step off the road at the Lower Leggett Road Trailhead and bam-you're in the woods. You're hiking along this creek bed, and in the spring there are rhododendrons and this lovely canopy of woods ... and it's instantaneous."

Although this scenic trail-which features overlooks, creeks, cascades and beautiful flora/fauna along the way-is easily accessible by many trailheads to create a customizable hiking experience whether you want an out-and-back or a thru-hike, hikers should be aware that Thompson rates the trail moderate to difficult.

"The terrain is difficult. It hugs the side of the River Gorge, and it's incredibly rocky. It also has some very steep elevation gains and losses," she says. "People should wear really sturdy hiking boots or shoes that will support their ankles. If you want to bring children, they're going to be walking or riding on your back. You can't bring a stroller."

Even though it may not be the best route for small children, leashed dogs are welcome. And backpackers can add this trail to their to-do list, says Thompson, because there is also a primitive campsite available along the way.

"I think this is one of the best kept secrets around Chattanooga," she says. "A lot of people aren't aware of it, and it's literally in our backyard."
