Chattanooga Ghost Tours offers chances for encounters

Chattanooga Ghost Tours Inc. has gone in search of Chattanooga ghosts on walking tours since 2007. Though these walks are popular with locals and tourists, there have been repeated requests for more encounters, according to owner Amy Petulla.

In response, the business has begun new ways to get closer to the spirits. These include an inside visit to a haunted location and the use of ghost-hunting equipment.

Extended tours: In addition to the regular nightly tours, the company offers an extended tour at 7:30 p.m. Thursdays and Saturdays that includes an inside visit to a haunted ex-brothel. The location's permanent resident is reported to be quite the rascal, and several guests have already captured ghostly images on film there. The feedback on the extended tour has been glowing, according to Chattanooga Ghost Tours owner Amy Petulla.

Regular tours begin nightly on the downtown side of the Walnut Street Bridge, 100 Walnut St. Cost is $14 for adults, $9 for children under 12. There is a nominal additional fee for the extended tour.

Ghost hunts: Chattanooga Ghost Tours is now also offering a ghost hunt, similar to the investigations seen on television, through the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga campus and Citizens Cemetery.

The hunt features the talking Ovilus X, the latest in ghost-hunting technology, used on "Ghost Adventures" and "Paranormal States." Paranormal aficionados claim the electronic device is a conduit to allow communication with spirits.

"The Ovilus has answered many, many questions appropriately and has even given names when asked to do so," Petulla said.

In addition, ghost-hunting equipment such as temperature guns and electromagnet field detectors are distributed among the guests.

Hunts begin at 615 McCallie Ave. and cost $20, adults only.

Ghost book: For those who prefer their ghosts at a distance, Petulla has co-written "Haunted Chattanooga" with Jessica Penot. The book includes stories from throughout Chattanooga and is available at local and online bookstores.
